Unlock Extra Tracking — Only in Burst Pro

  • Adding filters with MU Plugins. Quick & Easy

You might want to make some extra configurations to Burst Statistics that are not implemented into the plugin by default. To edit some features of Burst Statistics, you will need to apply some extra code to your WordPress installation. Below we will explain how you can use so-called Must-Use plugins to apply these filters.

    What are mu-plugins?

Must-Use plugins, in short, is a folder in WP-Content called ‘mu-plugins’ which is a collection of files that are activated by default and cannot be deactivated in your WordPress dashboard. These files will stay put and activated even if you’re updating your WordPress installation or theme. Filters can also be implemented in your functions.php, but this would mean that your theme can not be updated anymore, unless using a child-theme.

If you don’t have a mu-plugins folder in wp-content, you can simply open your FTP client, then add the folder under the wp-content directory. The result should look like */wp-content/mu-plugins/

How to implement filters with Must-Use plugins.

    1. Open your favorite text editor, start the file with <?php
    2. After editing the filter, save your file ending with .php. For example myfilter.php Tip: use a descriptive file name so you can remember the function of a particular mu-plugin.
    3. Upload myfilter.php to wp-content/mu-plugins/ via FTP
    4. Check your site if the plugin has the desired functionality. For some filters it might be neccesary to clear your cache and test in a private/incognito browser window when testing. If any errors appear, you can simply delete the file from the mu-plugins folder.

    That’s it!

  • Burst Pro nulled

You wouldn’t download a car, right?

Okay, I confess; It is tempting! I do understand the appeal of installing a Burst Pro nulled plugin. But before you install a cracked plugin on your site, let me explain the risks of a nulled plugin, cause they are real.

    The hidden risk of “free”

When developers crack software to create a Burst Pro nulled zip file, they strip out license verification. Often, they replace it with their own code.

This introduces risks that directly hurt your website.

    • Malware injection: Nulled plugins are one of the main ways hackers infect WordPress sites. You might save some money, but removing malware from your website is not fun.
    • Data leaks: Nulled code often includes backdoors that leak sensitive information.
    • No updates: A Burst Statistics Pro nulled version does not receive any updates. Which are essential for security. Outdated plugins and themes are the number one way WordPress websites get hacked.

The legality of a nulled plugin

Don’t let sketchy marketplaces confuse you about licensing.

While the free version of Burst Statistics is open-source (GPL), Burst Pro is not. Marketplaces selling “nulled” versions often claim it’s legal because of the GPL, but that is incorrect and misleading.

    How Burst Pro is licensed

Burst Pro uses a hybrid model. The core free plugin is GPL v2, but the Pro features are proprietary software protected by our Terms of Use and intellectual property rights.

You cannot legally resell or distribute Burst Pro without our consent. Using a nulled version is a violation of our terms and intellectual property, which could lead to legal action and claims for damages. All details on what is open-source and what is protected are clearly outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

The alternatives to a nulled Burst Pro

You don’t need to risk your site’s security to get the analytics you need. We created Burst Statistics (which is free forever) to satisfy all users who don’t create revenue from their website. We created Burst Pro to further help businesses optimise and improve their website.

If you can’t afford Burst Pro, you don’t need it. So avoid the risk of being hacked and losing all your data and just install Burst Statistics Free, just like 200.000+ other WordPress users.

    1. Burst Statistics Free

If budget is your main concern, download the official free version from the WordPress repository. It creates a privacy-friendly baseline for your site without the risk of malware that comes with using Burst Pro nulled plugins.

How to use the Campaign URL builder?

How to use the Campaign URL builder?

    1. Find the URL of the landingspage you want to create a campaign for

    2. Paste or type the URL in the ‘Website URL’ field

    3. Add the source, medium and campaign

    4. (Optional) Add the term and content

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UTM code and why do I need it?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) codes are snippets of text added to the end of a URL as a parameter. They tell your analytics software exactly where traffic is coming from.

    Which UTM parameters are required?

Strictly speaking, utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are the industry standards required for accurate tracking.

What exactly should I put in Source, Medium, Campaign, Term, and Content?

    utm_campaign – Campaign name (Examples:summer_sale, black_friday_2026, new_user_onboarding)
utm_source – Where the visitor came from (Examples: google, newsletter, facebook)
utm_medium – Type of traffic channel (Examples: cpc, email, social)
utm_content (optional) – Differentiate between two ads or buttons in the same campaign (Examples: cta_top vs. cta_bottom, red_button vs. blue_button)
utm_term (optional) – Commonly used for keywords in paid search ads (Examples:running_shoes, marketing_software)

What are the best practices for naming UTM parameters?

Consistency is the most critical factor for clean analytics data.
Lowercase only: Always use lowercase letters. Email and email are tracked as two different things. Stick to email to avoid confusion.
Use dashes, not spaces or underscores: URLs cannot contain spaces. While underscores (email_marketing) work, dashes (email-marketing) are generally preferred by search engines and are easier to read.
Keep it simple: Avoid redundancy. If your Source is google, your Medium shouldn’t be google-ads.
Don’t put personal information in UTMs: Like a user’s name or email address. This violates privacy regulations (GDPR/CCPA).

Will these links work with Google Analytics and other tools?

Yes. The UTM standard is universal. All respected analytic tools have some sort of UTM campaign tracking.

Does using UTM parameters affect my SEO?

No, UTM parameters do not directly hurt or help your organic search rankings. Google ignores these parameters when indexing your content. However, to avoid duplicate content issues, it is good practice to ensure your website uses “Canonical Tags” (most WordPress SEO plugins handle this automatically).

How do I view this data in Burst Pro?

If you are using Burst Pro, simply navigate to the “Sources” dashboard. Campaign information will be visible in a datatable.

  • Configuring Complianz for Burst

Have you experienced a sudden drop in statistics, or do you see unexplainable differences between statistics in Burst and another statistics plugin? If you have both Burst Statistics and Complianz installed, or any other fully integrated cookie banner plugin, this is exactly what might happen. The problem most likely is that you have configured your cookie banner plugin to require consent for the statistics category.

    Checking for attributes

You can check this by right clicking in your website, click “view source”, and search for the burst.min.js, or burst.js if you’re en debug mode. If the script the following attributes: type=”text/plain” data-service=”burst” data-category=”statistics”, then you are sure that statistics are not tracked without consent, which will lower statistics with about 80-90% in our experience.

    Differences in requirements per country

In most countries you do not require consent for anonymous statistics that is hosted on your own webserver: which is what Burst does. Some countries, do require consent for statistics however. But most countries do not require consent as long as the data is registered anonymously, and hosted on your own server. Please check with your legal advisor if this applies to your situation first.

    Methods to resolve the issue

There are several methods to allow statistics tracking without consent.

    • Whitelist Burst. For example in Complianz, you can whitelist the Burst Statistics script
    • In the Complianz wizard, in consent / statistics configuration, on the question “Do you want to ask consent for statistics?”, answer “no”.
    • In Complianz/Integrations/Plugins, disable the Burst integration.

Then check you still see the text/plain attribute in the Burst Statistics script.

For other cookie banner plugins you may need to follow similar steps. Following one of the above steps should allow tracking of statistics without requiring consent first.
